Carnival Venezia: Everything You Need to Know Before Cruising

You can’t miss the Spritz bar, which, in conjunction with the accompanying seating, provides the area with a pop of color. The 14-deck, 4,200-passenger ship, was initially made for the Italian cruise line Costa Venezia back in 2019, but several operational factors brought it to the shores of the US in 2023. It was customized to fit the Carnival look, without detracting from its Italian vibe.

While it underwent an overhaul in dry dock to add many of Carnival's signature venues, it retains much of its Costa-aligned, Italian-themed design.

You'll pay $2 per piece for sushi or sashimi (it's a limited menu of shrimp, salmon, yellowfin tuna and amberjack) or $6 to $8 for a sushi roll that is downright huge. Poke bowls, shrimp tempura plates and noodle bowls are also available for just $8. Taking the place of the more casual (and far less pricey) Cucina del Capitano Italian eatery found on other Carnival ships, it served dishes in a hit-or-miss fashion when I visited. I was served a mouth-wateringly soft house-made burrata with heirloom tomatoes and pesto as an appetizer, but a grilled octopus appetizer that looked absolutely beautiful on presentation was sadly under-seasoned to the point of having almost no taste. It's a good idea to make reservations for the ship's five specialty restaurants as soon as you can, as they tend to fill up quickly. While I only was on Carnival Venezia for five nights, I was able to hit just about every food outlet on board — something that isn't easy given how many there are.

As was the case with so many cruise ships, Costa Venezia’s activity serving East Asian itineraries ground to a halt over the Covid-19 pandemic. The ship was only saved when the Carnival brand decided to take over and give this ship new life. Costa Venezia (along with sister ship Costa Firenze) has always offered a thoroughly Italian flair, which can still be seen today, despite renovations (though this isn’t a bad thing at all). More specifically, Costa Venezia featured a Venetian-inspired theme, to go along with, of course, the name. The original Costa Venezia (built by Fincantieri in Italy) debuted on May 18, 2019, in Shanghai, following a March 1 christening ceremony in Trieste, Italy.

Venezia holds formal dining nights, which adds to the charm and elegance of the passengers’ experience. Comedy shows are held in the Limelight Lounge, which doubles as the Punchliners Comedy Club. When not playing host to family-friendly and more adult-themed laugh fests, the Limelight is also a great place to do various activities, from karaoke to late-night dance parties. The space is also available for games such as Deal Or No Deal, Bingo, and other activities. This line knows how to keep the entire family occupied, and the WaterWorks area is no exception, which offers three slides (one enclosed) and a splash pad for kids. Perhaps the swankiest of these suites is the Terrazza Premium Balcony staterooms, which sit on the very back of the ship and offer large, wrap-around balconies and plenty of privacy.

The menu includes several of Alchemy’s most popular drinks, made with Italian bitters and liqueurs. Just like at Alchemy Bar, Amari is staffed by knowledgeable mixologists who handcraft a cocktail to your specifications. The most amazing is the Canal Grande, which spans two decks on the ship’s aft end.

You won’t get great views, but you will get a little extra natural light and airiness. Interior staterooms are broken down into several types, including standard interior staterooms and interior staterooms with picture windows and portholes. Even the hull livery is different, blending Costa and Carnival with a yellow stripe (rather than red) along the hull to match the ship’s yellow funnel. For example, the ship retains its Venice-inspired decor, with Italian-leaning architecture found throughout the ship.

Also, the new-to-Carnival Tomodoro, offering up a menu of Italian and Mexican faves, such as meatballs and tacos, respectively. The Marco Polo dining room may not offer eye-popping features, but it manages to pull off the type of intimacy rarely achieved by a main dining room. Using structures within the room to carve out smaller spaces while giving off Tuscan vibes. There are also new-to-Carnival spaces, including the Rococo Bar, decorated with classic paintings, offering a wide variety of frozen cocktails. This occupies the space where you’d find the BlueIguana Tequila Bar on other Carnival ships.

But it's one with an Italian twist — one so strong that you suspect there's a backstory, and indeed there is. Cove Balcony staterooms get you close to the waterline, and feature balconies that let you make the most of your location, for one amazing up-close view of the wake and sea foam as the ship cruises along. Find out which fun ingredients — staterooms, dining, activities — go into each deck. There are also plenty of places to party in the port of Palma (Majorca), with options for nightlife, wine tasting, and more. If you enjoy art, you can visit galleries and perhaps purchase an original piece from a local artist.

Take a look at this photo gallery to help you envision your perfect vacation. Terrazza staterooms are only open to cruisers ages 12 and up, and guests under 21 must be accompanied by an adult when visiting Terrazza Carnevale. It’s expected that Carnival Firenze — Carnival’s takeover of sister ship Costa Firenze — will follow Carnival Venezia’s example at a later date. Under the Carnival umbrella, both will be considered part of the Venice class, which is a subcategory of Carnival’s current Vista class.

Limelight Lounge (the place for the "Punchliner Comedy Club") offers live evening entertainment by vocalists, musicians, comedians, and karaoke. Playlist Productions are music revues combining live performances (singing, dancing, acting) with LED staging and special effects. Wifi is available in all staterooms for an additional charge as well as in public areas. Suites receive free 24-hour room service, slippers, bathrobes plus drinks package and personal valet.

Sitting at the base of the ship's central atrium, which has the Venice-themed name of Piazza San Marco, the Atrium Bar is right in the middle of everything and bustling at all hours. That's partly because it's a hub for live music — either a singer and pianist, a solo guitarist or a string trio, depending on the time of day. The new entrant to Carnival's food scene is Il Viaggio, serving high-end Italian cuisine. With a fixed price of $42 per person, it's one of the priciest eateries on the ship. The restaurant leans into the Italian theming of the vessel with a relatively small, curated menu of Italian specialties such as Tuscan-style sea bass with a Parmesan crust and steak pizzaiola from the Lazio region.

The 2019-built (as Costa Venezia) cruise ship Carnival Venezia was Costa Cruises' first liner constructed and designed specifically for China's market. Venezia and the sistership Costa Firenze (2020) were both produced by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri - Venezia at Monfalcone Shipyard (near Trieste), Firenze - at Marghera Shipyard (near Venice). Each vessel has GT tonnage 135,500 tons, 2116 cabins and passenger capacity 4200 (max / double-occupancy 5260 pax). Playlist Productions encompasses some of Carnival’s best entertainment, offering musical reviews, Broadway-style shows, and more across the line’s fleet.
